About

Montinique Monroe is a freelance photojournalist based in Austin, Texas, where she was born and raised. She discovered her passion for photography as a student journalist in 2014 while covering the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. There, Montinique realized the power of telling a story through images and how crucial it is to relaying news.

Montinique has always been drawn to journalism. When she learned about journalists such as Ida B. Wells, she realized the field could be an avenue to tell the story of her father, Paul Monroe, who was fatally shot by an Austin police officer in 1993. During the journey to tell her father’s story, Montinique realized her ultimate calling: to bring light to underreported narratives like her and her father’s.

Montinique graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science in multimedia journalism. When she’s not executing daily photo assignments, she’s documenting every day Black life in her community. Her clients include The Washington Post, The New York Times, Getty Images and the Texas Tribune, among others.

Montinique is available for assignments.
